Greetings!

Jody Wheeler has been thinking about machines, meaning, and creativity long before it was a hot take. A filmmaker, educator, and former mental health professional, he's spent 25 years studying how humans make meaning — and is now professionally skeptical about what happens when we outsource it to AI. He consults on AI through his company Fractal Boundaries, taught screenwriting at USC, teaches critical thinking and English at Pacific Oaks College, and has film credits including The Dark Place, Judas Kiss, and Hippopotamus.

My Story

Jody Wheeler graduated from James Madison University with a Bachelors in Political Science, went on to earn a Masters in Counseling Psychology from George Mason University, and added another Masters in Screenwriting and Film from UCLA. The through-line between all three degrees? Story. Narrative. The particular way people order instances and presentation to convey emotions, ideas and, most importantly, meaning. It's the same cognitive mood, just wearing different clothes — and, occasionally, no clothes at all.

That interest with meaning-making is what brought him to AI — not so much as a cheerleader, but as a critically focused voice. Through Fractal Boundaries LLC, Jody consults with individuals and organizations navigating the AI landscape: what it's actually good for, where it quietly erodes human judgment, and how to use it without losing the thing that makes your work yours. He also teaches at Pacific Oaks College, where he focuses on critical thinking and communication in an age when both are under pressure.

Jody has directed and produced features and short films, including the mystery thriller The Dark Place, the modern fantasy Judas Kiss, the sci-fi tale Heat Wave, and the prize-winning shorts Hippopotamus and In The Closet. He is currently developing new projects, including The Association, and Quieten, both science fiction series.

"Everyone has something to say. The challenge is figuring out what you actually mean, not what the machine means for you to say."
