Between 2011 and 2014 I was one of the organizers and hosts of "Bent Con", something we fabulously referred to as "Comic Con: Only Gayer." Spinning the story on its head, we focused on comics, films, and other pop culture from a LGBTQ+ perspective. At the time, gay was still on the edge of "nerd cool." It was a bit of an afterthought at places like ComiCon or Dragon Con. A bunch of us took it on ourselves to create something for us, about us, and by us. It was a blast.
While we never grew into something as big as any of the mainstream conventions -- it's a lot harder to grow a convention than to put a convention on... and it's hard as hell to put a convention on! -- the five years we did were fantastic.
